Côte d'Azur and Modernity - 1918 - 1958

The exhibition which opened its doors in June 1997 revealed the extraordinary profusion of creations developed from Hyères to Menton, between 1918 and 1958.
Artists and intellectuals coming from the whole world - voluntary exiles of the capitals of art or forced to the flight - met here to work, sheltered from the violence of History, in the sunny peace of mind of the Côte d’Azur, alone or in group, the time of a summer or for their whole life.
The excitement of these forty years and the originality of the personalities who stayed on the Côte d'Azur, from a war to the other one, gave birth to a multi-form production which made echo to the avant-gardes like for the calls to order of modernity ; rich in 3000 numbers, the exhibition raised a coherent panorama of it.
The masterpieces of the greatest artists of the century were next to the forgotten ones; the famous photographers, the document of current events; the myth of the antic Mediterranean Sea, the modern Côte d'Azur of casinos and competition of elegance; the spiritual quest nearby the worldly life, the revival of the local productions to the most radical creations of modernity, the shade and the light in contrast …
Each of the 28 places had dedicated itself to a domain, a theme or a particular discipline of the modernity : sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, photography are for the honor. The common catalog, handling each of these aspects, thanks to numerous scientific contributions and a plentiful iconography, also gathered studies about the literature, the music, the theater, the cinema, the fashion and the architecture.
Very numerous exposed artists have found place there : Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Picabia, Van Dongen, Magnelli, Sonia Delaunay, Arp and Sophie Taeuber, Mansouroff, Vantongerloo, Dufy, Chagall, Duchamp, Man Ray, Cocteau, Lartigue, Maywald, Eileen, Gray, Mallet-Stevens, etc. … But also movements at their starting such as the New Realism or Fluxus.
On the occasion of this first shutter,  museums and cultural services had organized concerts, readings, routes, colloquiums and educational workshops having for the same object the discovery of the prodigious modern artistic heritage of Côte d'Azur.
